Variety believes every child deserves the thrill, excitement, and joy of outdoor play. Playgrounds are not just spaces to have fun - they inspire learning, build friendships, and promote healthy activity. Most importantly, they break down barriers, creating inclusive experiences where children of all abilities can play side by side.
In 2014, we proudly opened the Ashley Okland Variety Star Playground in Des Moines, honoring Young Variety Board Member Ashley Okland. It was the city’s first inclusive playground, and the community's response was overwhelming. Since then, we’ve built additional Variety Star Playgrounds in Cedar Rapids, Riverview Park in Des Moines, and one currently underway at the Clive Greenbelt.
Now, we’re thrilled to announce our fifth inclusive playground, set to open at the Iowa State Fair in 2025! Designed with an exciting agricultural theme, this playground will inspire creativity and fun with farm animals, accessible ramps, and smooth, easy-to-navigate surfaces. It will be a space where children of all abilities can play freely and fully experience the magic of the Iowa State Fair. Beyond the fair, the playground will also be used by daycares and host other events throughout the year, ensuring it remains a vibrant and inclusive destination for all.
