ASAP, the After School Arts Program affirms young people through the arts by providing enriching arts educational opportunities they would not otherwise have. ASAP works for equity of access to the arts in our community and helps children explore their own creativity while broadening their awareness of the varieties of artistic expression.
Variety grant funds purchased necessary art supplies for the After School Arts Program’s free classes, camps, and outreach activities for underserved kids. ASAP participant Caime is a first-grade English language learner whose parents speak only Korean at home. “We don’t paint at home... just at ASAP class.” Caime says. Caime’s teacher has observed that she is very creative and always has something she wants to share, despite struggling with limited English. ASAP’s hour-long studio classes allow Caime to be social, to ask for help, describe her ideas, and compliment her peers. Her teacher says the unique environment has given her a voice: “Her confidence just grows and grows. I watch her independence and her strength, and it’s because of ASAP.” Variety funding affirms young people through the arts and makes art programs accessible for underserved children throughout Des Moines.
